TikTok has agreed to pay at least $100 million to the state of Alabama to settle a lawsuit alleging the video platform misled users about safety and engineered its features to be addictive to children just as the trial was set to begin.
Under the terms of the settlement, the company will introduce a mandatory two-hour daily time limit for underage users, impose restrictions on overnight usage, limit cosmetic filters, and provide enhanced parental controls. Depending on certain conditions, the final payout could ultimately reach up to $300 million.
This legal resolution follows another major financial penalty in August, where TikTok settled with the U.S. Department of Justice for $400 million over child privacy violations, highlighting mounting regulatory pressure on social media giants regarding youth protection.
