The social media platform X has announced the phased discontinuation of its controversial revenue-sharing program for creators, citing misaligned incentives and widespread exploitation by clickbait accounts. Starting September 8, the company will introduce the new ‘Original Content Rewards’ system, designed from the ground up to prioritize authentic, value-driven material over algorithmic gaming.
To qualify for the upcoming program, creators must maintain an active Premium subscription, accumulate at least 500 verified followers, and reach 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over a 90-day period. Eligible content includes original reporting, custom visuals, unique photography, and insightful commentary that adds meaningful value, while simple reposts, downloads, and copied material are strictly excluded.
This major overhaul follows several unsuccessful attempts to patch the previous monetization model, which frequently rewarded aggregation rather than creativity. Creators currently enrolled in the legacy system will continue receiving payouts through September 7 before the platform transitions entirely to the new originality-focused framework.
- X is ending its legacy creator revenue sharing program on September 7.
- The new Original Content Rewards program launches on September 8.
- Eligibility requires a Premium sub, 500 verified followers, and 500k impressions.
- The policy cracks down on unoriginal reposts and algorithm exploiters.
