Waymo has officially resumed its autonomous taxi service in San Antonio, Texas, five months after severe flooding caused operational disruptions. Back in April, several company vehicles became trapped during heavy downpours as they attempted to navigate waterlogged streets. This incident prompted a software recall in May and temporary restrictions in flood-prone zones.
The relaunch comes with critical software upgrades designed to help the autonomous vehicles better detect and avoid standing water in real time. The renewed operations deploy dozens of vehicles across a 60-mile territory, covering key locations such as downtown and the San Antonio International Airport.
This step marks an important milestone for Waymo as it refines its safety protocols against environmental hazards, while continuing to expand its commercial footprint across 15 cities nationwide.
