Proxima Fusion invests €140M in European superconducting tape production

Tech/AI

German fusion startup Proxima Fusion has announced plans to build a €140 million factory dedicated to producing high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape. This specialized material is essential for generating the powerful magnetic fields required to contain plasma within fusion reactors and achieve controlled nuclear fusion.

The initiative follows a major funding round secured earlier by the company and will be backed by a mix of private capital and public support, including €21 million from the German state of Lower Saxony. Currently, the production of HTS tape is heavily dominated by suppliers in China and Japan, posing supply chain challenges for Western energy startups.

With demonstration and commercial plants requiring tens of thousands of kilometers of this tape, establishing domestic manufacturing is a crucial milestone for the viability of fusion energy. Moving forward, Proxima Fusion aims to scale its production infrastructure to secure the supply chain needed for its upcoming reactor designs.

  • Proxima Fusion to build a €140M factory for HTS tape production.
  • Material is vital for magnetic containment in fusion reactors.
  • Aims to counter the dominance of Asian suppliers in China and Japan.
  • Project backed by private funds and regional state support in Germany.
