Comcast is rolling out a free motion-sensing feature to millions of compatible Xfinity routers, specifically models XB7 and newer, by analyzing disruptions in local Wi-Fi signals. Part of the new Xfinity Shield service, the Wi-Fi Motion tool allows homeowners to monitor activity and receive security alerts without purchasing dedicated hardware.
However, privacy advocates have raised concerns over the trade-offs involved. Comcast’s policy states that information generated by the Wi-Fi motion tracking may be disclosed to third parties—including law enforcement or in connection with legal disputes—without providing further notice to the end user.
