Apple Pay launches in India starting with partnership with Axis Bank

Apple is officially introducing Apple Pay to the Indian market through an initial partnership with Axis Bank. The rollout begins on a limited scale, supporting specific Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis, while omitting India’s domestic RuPay network for the time being.

The tech giant’s entry into the world’s most populous nation takes place in a digital payments landscape heavily dominated by the state-backed Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Because Apple Pay relies on traditional card rails rather than direct bank-to-bank transfers, expansion is more complex. Additionally, Apple’s proposed transaction fee of about 20 basis points has created friction in negotiations with other major Indian lenders.

Despite these initial hurdles and uneven terminal acceptance, launching the service gives Apple a fresh monetization avenue aimed at the country’s growing demographic of affluent iPhone owners.

  • Apple Pay debuts in India with Axis Bank as its initial partner.
  • Initial support limited to select Visa and Mastercard cards.
  • Commercial terms and fee disputes hinder adoption by other major banks.
  • Service targets India’s expanding and increasingly affluent iPhone user base.
