Google Pics: The new AI design tool aiming to rival Canva

AI

Google is challenging the digital design market with the introduction of Google Pics, a new artificial intelligence-powered application designed to compete with popular platforms like Canva and Adobe Express. Powered by the company’s Nano Banana image-generation model, the tool enables business users and premium subscribers to generate posters, social media visuals, and everyday graphics simply by typing text prompts instead of designing from scratch.

The software is being natively integrated into the Google Workspace ecosystem, rolling out first in Docs and Slides, with future availability planned for Google Drive. Along with AI generation, Google Pics offers practical editing features such as object isolation, text translation within images, and collaborative multi-user workflows to help teams finalize their creative projects efficiently.

The rollout is scheduled to begin over the coming weeks for Workspace customers and high-tier AI subscribers. While this text-to-design approach streamlines everyday office productivity, it sidesteps traditional marketplace models where artists earn royalties, focusing entirely on AI-driven generation trained on creative works.

  • Google launches Google Pics for prompt-based image creation and editing.
  • Direct integration into Google Workspace starting with Docs and Slides.
  • Direct competitor to established design platforms like Canva and Adobe Express.
  • Rolling out soon for business customers and premium AI subscribers.
