Indian startup Alteon has secured $2.5 million in a pre-seed funding round led by prominent investor Lachy Groom. Founded by 20-year-old Samay Sanghvi, the company aims to develop autonomous aircraft capable of staying airborne for over a year by harvesting energy from ocean winds.
The technology relies on dynamic soaring, the same technique used by albatrosses to extract energy from wind gradients close to the water’s surface. While the startup has completed initial autonomous flight tests, proving that the aircraft can continuously sustain flight solely on harvested wind energy remains a significant engineering hurdle.
Aerospace experts acknowledge the technical risks involved, particularly regarding low-altitude turbulence and weather conditions, but see immense potential for maritime surveillance and long-term data collection.
