United States authorities have seized a series of domains utilized by a large-scale botnet linked to state-sponsored cyberattacks from China. The network was allegedly operated by Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Tech and served to obfuscate malicious traffic, making hacker activities harder to detect by federal defenses.
According to the Department of Justice, the compromised targets over the years included major federal departments such as NASA, the Department of Energy, and recently the U.S. Senate. By seizing these hardcoded communication domains, law enforcement has successfully crippled the botnet’s command and control infrastructure.
