Google introduces new tool to help publishers fight AI traffic losses

Google is rolling out a new interactive button called “Preferred Sources” that online publishers can embed directly on their websites. This feature allows readers to easily designate a site as a favorite source, helping it appear more prominently across Google Search, Google News, and the Discover feed.

The initiative aims to mitigate the traffic declines web publishers have experienced as search engines increasingly rely on AI-generated summaries and features. Google notes that users are twice as likely to click through to preferred sources when they are highlighted in results, offering a potential lifeline for traffic-dependent businesses.

In addition to the new embedding tool, Google is introducing natural language customization for the Discover feed and personalized audio briefings for Android users, further enhancing user control over content delivery.

  • New embeddable ‘Preferred Sources’ button for publisher websites
  • Designed to combat traffic losses caused by AI search features
  • Natural language feed customization for Google Discover
  • Higher user click-through rates reported for preferred publishers
